Box-Office Shocker: 'American Sniper' Tops Friday With $30.5Million

American Sniper is a 2014-15 American biographical action film directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Jason Dean Hall starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, Sienna Miller as his wife Taya Renae Kyle, Luke Grimes, Kyle Gallner, Sam Jaeger, Jake McDorman and Cory Hardrict.

The film is scheduled to receive a limited release on December 25, 2014, before opening wide on January 16, 2015.

Cooper plays Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in American military history, who claims to have killed 255 people during his four tours in Iraq.

Boxoffice Success!

Clint Eastwood's American Sniper is smashing records at the North American box office, where it topped Friday's chart with $30.5 million from 3,555 theaters for a debut in the $75 million-$80 million range over the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, well ahead of expectations.

That would mark the largest opening of all time for the month of January, as well as one of the top grosses ever for a non-tentpole, much less an R-rated, modern-day war film.

Movie Review!

Clint Eastwood's American Sniper is a film that evokes complicated emotions. A month after seeing it, you might still be wrestling with whether it's powerful, profound, or propaganda. Maybe that shouldn't be surprising. After all, Eastwood is a guy who built his career on the paradox of violence — the early shoot-'em-ups followed by the late Saul-on-the-road-to-Damascus conversion of Unforgiven. But he seems to want it both ways with American Sniper, a movie that treats killing with videogame impersonality, then tries all too quickly to reckon with the psychological fallout of those acts.

"Bradley Cooper plays the finest role of his career." - TIME #AmericanSniper now playing in select theaters, released worldwide on January 16th. Watch the new clip below:
