EXCLUSIVE: Scarlett Johansson will star in the live-action "Ghost in the Shell" movie

Variety reports that Scarlett Johansson has officially been signed on to star in Dreamwork’s live action adaptation of the Japanese animated/action film Ghost in the Shell. The film is based on Shirow Masamune's cyberpunk manga of the same name.

The date of the movie going to floors isn't confirm yet, but some of the names attached include Steven Spielberg and director Rupert Sanders under the Dreamworks banner. It's a neo-reality cyborg action thriller based off of a classic anime, that deals with being human in a world where technology runs the show.

Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing the film from a script by Bill Wheeler. Mark Sourian is the executive producer.

Deadline Hollywood had reported earlier that the actress had the offer to star but she wasn't sure about taking the role. Sources now say Scarlett has agreed to star in the pic.

The 1995 animated film Ghost in the Shell is itself an adaptation of the manga of the same name. Directed by Mamoru Oshii, the film follows Motoko Kusanaigi and her security agency squad members on their search for a malicious hacker named the Puppet Master. That's really just the introduction, as the film blooms into a masterpiece about technology, sex, and paranoia.

Well, lets just hope that they don't ruin this perfect animation flick and a cult classic like they did 'Dragon Ball Z'
